As a child, Derrick was much smaller than most of the kids his age. Being an easy target for childhood bullies and having a strong desire to prevent any more attacks, Derrick fell in love with Martial Arts. He began begging his mother to buy books about martial arts, and began teaching himself moves from the books and movies. Inspired by the 1974 film “Black Belt Jones”, starring Jim Kelly, Derrick became obsessed with mastering the martial arts. Around that same time he met his first teacher, Master Nathan Earl Hines who introduced him to the world of traditional Japanese Karate, Chinese Kung Fu and Bruce Lee’s training philosophies.
As a teenager, Derrick was almost abducted. That was a real eye-opening experience. He learned that you can’t just “know” some self-defense, you need to have reflexes and have the ability to execute what you know. But beyond that, you MUST be in the right condition to protect yourself. Training harder became a priority. Derrick has had the absolute pleasure of training “WITH” and “UNDER” several Great Martial Arts Masters over the years, including 7 Time World Karate Champion & Creator of Tae Bo, Billy Blanks, The Legendary Guro Dan Inosanto and undefeated World Kickboxing Champion Pete “Sugarfoot” Cunningham, to name a few. Derrick was also the Creator and a member of the performance group,
Momentum. Momentum, which consisted of several teens from Derrick’s alma mater, TC Williams High School in Alexandria, VA (Remember The Titans), was widely known in the DC area for their unusual martial arts demonstrations.
Health & Fitness
After a severe illness, Derrick became almost obsessed with health, nutrition, fitness and the human body. He studied all aspects of their inter-connection for many years, influenced heavily by the teachings of the amazing Jack Lalanne.
Derrick has had the privilege of teaching black belt instructors, military personnel, police officers, girl scout troops, women’s groups, as well as beginner and advanced students at various martial arts schools, college campuses and organizations in the DC Metro Area, Atlanta and Los Angeles. He has a long history of teaching original format kickboxing, self-defense, abs conditioning, sports conditioning, boot camps, and personal training at many prominent fitness facilities (including Gold’s Gym, Sport & Health, Olympus Gym, PTO Fitness, PIES Fitness, Anytime Fitness, and The Belle Haven Country Club,).
Theatre & Writing
Derrick joined his first theatre group at age 10 and was instantly in love with the stage. He studied playwriting under the tutelage of legendary playwrights Steve Carter and Dr. Paul D’Andrea.
He has had several articles published in Men’s Fitness Magazine. He has also been quoted as a subject matter expert for several articles in Men’s Fitness Magazine.
Derrick has appeared in several feature films and on national television, and he has been featured in The Washington Post, The Alexandria Times (front cover), The Washington City Paper, The Alexandria Gazette and has been a guest on MTV.
